In short

  • Giving is not open yet. On this preview site nothing is charged and no receipt is issued.
  • Our current tax status is shown in the section on tax status below.
  • When giving opens, every gift will get a numbered receipt, and you will stop a monthly gift in two taps from the link we email you.
  • We are not registered to fundraise in any state yet, and we will not ask for donations until we are registered where the law requires it.
  • Our refund policy will be published here once counsel approves it.

These terms apply to gifts made on this site. Giving is in preview today: you can walk through every step, nothing is charged and no receipt is issued. Some sections describe how giving will work when it opens; they say so.

Our tax status

The Medical Bill, Inc. is incorporated. Our federal tax-exempt status is not confirmed yet, so gifts may not qualify for a federal income tax deduction.

Tax deductibility outside the United States depends on your local law.

Every receipt will say that you received no goods or services in return for your gift. Ask a tax adviser how a gift affects your own taxes. Our taxes page explains more.

How your gift is used

All gifts, including gifts through a campaign, go to one fund for our work to buy medical debt and cancel it. We do not take gifts for a named person or a specific debt, and a campaign gift is not set aside for anyone the campaign honors.

We have not made a purchase yet. Every cancellation will be posted on the Impact ledger, with the date, the debt cancelled and the people it reached.

How our running costs are paid is still being decided. Until it is, we do not say what share of a gift goes to buying debt. Our financial statements and filings will be linked on our transparency page once we have them.

If you ask for a gift to be used in a way we cannot honor, we will ask you what you would like us to do, or return the gift.

Paying for your gift

The secure payment step is run by our payment partner. It is not connected yet, so nothing is charged on this site today. When it is connected, this section will say which payment methods are offered, what our payment partner receives and the name you will see on your statement.

Currencies

Gifts are set in US dollars. Whether the payment step can show the amount in another currency depends on our payment partner. If it does, the exchange rate is set by the payment partner, not by us, and the amount is shown before you pay.

Covering the fees

There are no tips, ever. At the payment step you can choose to add an amount that helps cover processing costs. The box is never checked for you, and the exact amount is shown before you pay.

Your receipts

When giving opens, every gift will get a numbered receipt by email. It will show our legal name, the amount, the date and our tax-status sentence. You will be able to open it again from the receipt page, or from the link in any email about a monthly gift. If a receipt has a mistake, we will void it and issue a new one with a new number. Each January we will also send a statement of your gifts for the year before.

Receipts shown in the preview are samples. They are not receipts and do not record a gift.

Monthly gifts

When giving opens, a monthly gift works like this:

  • You choose the amount. It is charged each month on the date of your first gift until you stop it.
  • You get a receipt for each charge.
  • Change the amount, pause, resume or stop the gift from the link we email you. Stopping takes two taps.
  • If you can't get to that email, use our contact form and choose “Stop a monthly gift without the email link”. Tell us the date of a gift, the amount and the last four digits of the card, so we can find it.
  • We will tell you before we change how monthly gifts work.

How failed monthly payments are retried will be described here when the payment step is connected. The full terms for monthly gifts, including the notices some states require for automatic renewals, will be published here once counsel approves them.

Refunds and mistakes

Our refund policy will be published here once counsel approves it.

Giving is not open, so there is nothing to refund. Please contact us before you dispute a charge with your bank, so we can help.

Gifts in honor or memory

When giving opens, you can dedicate a gift to someone. The name you enter will print on your receipt. We will not send a card or notice at first. Enter only what the person or their family would be comfortable with.

Showing your name

Gifts through a campaign can show your name or “Anonymous” on the campaign page. Other gifts are never listed in public. Anonymous hides your name from the public only: your receipt and our records keep it, because tax and charity law need them.

Messages with your gift

Our staff can read a message you add. On a campaign, the organizer sees it only after it is checked. Messages are never published.

Giving from outside the United States

Tax deductibility outside the United States depends on your local law. The payment methods offered will depend on where you are. We cannot accept gifts that US sanctions law prohibits.

Gifts we may decline or return

We may decline or return a gift that comes from an unlawful source, uses a stolen card, would give anyone control over which debt we buy or what we publish, or would require us to break a promise to the people whose debt we cancel. Our full gift acceptance policy will be published once our board adopts it.

Your privacy as a donor

We never sell, rent, trade or swap donor information, and we put no ad trackers on our giving pages. Your email is never shown to campaign organizers or the public. Our privacy policy lists what we keep about a gift and for how long.

Fundraising registration and state disclosures

We have not registered to fundraise in any state yet. We will not ask for donations until we are registered where the law requires it.

Many states require a charitable organization to register before it asks people in that state for gifts. When we register, each state's required statement will be published, and our status in every state and the District of Columbia will be listed on one page.
