In short

  • Reading this site is free. Giving, starting a campaign, signing in or sending a form means you accept these terms.
  • We buy medical debt in bulk and cancel it. We can't take requests to cancel a specific bill.
  • Our help pages are general information, not legal, tax, medical or financial advice.
  • Campaigns raise money for us to buy and cancel medical debt. They can't pay a specific person's bill.
  • Counsel has not reviewed these terms yet. Sections that need counsel's wording say so.

Each section starts with one plain sentence. The text under it gives the detail.

Reading it is free. When you give, start a campaign, sign in or send us a form, you accept these terms and the policies they link to, including our privacy policy and our donation terms.

Who can use what

In short: anyone can read; some things need an adult.

Anyone may read this site. Campaign organizers must be 18 or older. Whether people under 18 may give, and with whose permission, will be stated here once counsel confirms it. The admin area is for our staff only.

What we are, and what we are not

In short: we buy medical debt and cancel it. We never charge people who owe it.

We raise money to buy medical debt in bulk and cancel it, and we publish help for people with medical bills. We cannot take requests to cancel a specific bill.

We are not a debt collector, a debt settlement or debt relief company, a credit counselor, a law firm, a tax adviser, an insurer or a health care provider. We never charge people who have medical debt, and we never ask anyone to pay to receive relief.

Help pages are information, not advice

In short: our guides help you understand your options; they do not replace a professional.

Our guides, letters, scripts, glossary and the charity-care checker are general information. They are not legal, tax, medical or financial advice, and using them does not create a lawyer-client or any other professional relationship. Each page shows when it was last checked and whether an expert has reviewed it. Laws change, and your situation may differ. The checker gives an estimate; the hospital makes the final decision.

If you are facing a lawsuit, a wage garnishment or a large bill you cannot pay, talk to a lawyer or a local legal aid office.

Using our letters and scripts

In short: they are written for you to copy and send about your own bills.

You may copy our letters and scripts, fill them in and send them about your own medical bills or to help someone you know. They promise no result.

The licence for reusing our letters and scripts in other ways will be published here once counsel approves it.

In short: quote us with a link; don't use our name to suggest we endorse you.

The text, design and images on this site belong to us unless a page says otherwise. You may quote short parts with a link to the page. Our name and logo identify us. Do not use them in a way that suggests we endorse you, or that could be mistaken for our letters or emails.

Using the site fairly

In short: use the site honestly and don't harm it or the people on it.

Do not:

  • use stolen cards, test cards or anyone else's payment details;
  • use bots to get around our checks, or attack, overload or probe the site;
  • copy the site in a way that burdens it (search engines that follow our robots file are welcome);
  • pretend to be us, or copy our letters or emails;
  • harass organizers, donors or staff, or send false reports;
  • use the site for anything unlawful.

In short: sign-in links work once and expire.

Staff and campaign organizers sign in with a link we email. Each link works once and expires. Keep your email account secure. We may end a session at any time to protect an account.

Giving through this site

In short: gifts are voluntary and follow our donation terms.

Gifts are voluntary and go to the organization named at the top of these terms. Our donation terms explain tax status, receipts, monthly gifts and refunds. We may decline or return a gift, for example one made with a stolen card.

Campaign rules

In short: a campaign raises money for us to buy and cancel medical debt. It can't pay a specific person's bill.

  • A campaign is a page that asks people to give to us. Every gift is a gift to us, receipted by us and used for our work to buy and cancel medical debt.
  • A campaign cannot pay or target a specific person's bill, provider or account. You can start one in someone's honor or memory.
  • Organizers never receive or hold the money.
  • Your page must be true and in your own words. It must not include anyone's health details, bills or account numbers, the names of hospitals or collectors, contact details or links, or support for or against a candidate or party.
  • Pages are checked automatically. A page that a check flags waits for a person before it goes live. We do not promise a time for that review.
  • We may pause or remove a page that breaks these rules, and we tell the organizer why.
  • Anyone can report a page. A report never removes a page by itself; a person decides.

The full campaign terms are being written with counsel and will be published before campaigns open.

Reporting a problem

In short: tell us about a bad page, a scam or a mistake.

Use the report link on a campaign page, the report form for suspicious letters, or the form for mistakes. We store every message and review it. We can't promise a reply yet.

Other services

In short: some steps happen on services we don't run.

When giving opens, payments go through the secure payment step of our payment partner, and its terms apply there. Cloudflare checks our forms for bots. Share buttons and links take you to other sites, whose terms apply.

Language versions

In short: some translations are machine drafts, and each one says so.

This site is published in many languages. Pages that a person has not reviewed say so in a banner. Which language version controls if two versions differ will be stated here once counsel confirms it.

Disclaimers and limits on liability

In short: we work hard to be accurate, and we fix mistakes in public.

We check our facts, date them and list our sources, and we correct mistakes in our corrections log. Our disclaimers and limits on liability will be published here once counsel approves them. Nothing in these terms takes away rights the law gives you.

Law, courts and disputes

In short: counsel is still writing this section.

Which law and which courts govern these terms, and how disputes are handled, will be stated here once counsel approves the wording. Our mailing address is on our transparency page.

Suspending or ending access

In short: we may block abuse.

We may suspend a campaign, end a sign-in session or block access from a device or network that is attacking the site or breaking these terms.

Changes to these terms

In short: every change is dated.

The version line at the top of this page shows when these terms took effect and when they last changed. Every change is listed at the end of the page. Changes apply from their effective date. You can ask us for an earlier version.

Notices and contact

In short: write to us through the contact form or by mail.

Use our contact form, or write to the mailing address shown at the top of these terms.
