We are opening our books before our first purchase.

We have not bought any medical debt yet, and we are saying so on day one. Here is what we are building, what our books show today and what has to happen before the first purchase.

What we are building

Unpaid medical bills are often sold in bulk. We are building an organization that raises money to buy that debt and cancel it, then posts every cancellation on a public ledger.

Next to that, we are writing free help for people with medical bills they have now: guides, letters and scripts, a glossary and a tool that estimates whether hospital financial assistance could cover a bill. We can't cancel a specific bill on request, so we want to help with what works today.

What our books show today

Purchases completed as of November 3, 2026: 0.

Giving is in preview, so you can walk through every step and nothing is charged. We have not mailed any relief letters. Our Impact ledger shows the same thing, and it will change only when something real happens.

How every cancellation will be posted

Each cancellation will get its own line on the ledger:

  • the date;
  • the face value of the debt we cancelled;
  • the number of people it reached;
  • a region, shown only when it cannot point to anyone.

If we get a line wrong, we will correct it in the open, with a dated note.

What has to happen first

Before the first purchase, we still have to:

  1. confirm our federal tax status, so every receipt can say exactly what a gift is for tax purposes;
  2. register to fundraise in the states that require it, starting with our home state;
  3. connect the secure payment step and open giving;
  4. set up email from our own domain, for receipts and links;
  5. bring in expert reviewers for our guides and translations.

We have not set dates for these steps. When one is done, it will be marked on our transparency page.

How to follow along

The ledger, the transparency page and our corrections log are the record. New posts on this news page will be dated, and each one will say when it was last checked.
