We are incorporated, and we raise money to buy medical debt and cancel it. Our transparency page shows our legal name, address and current tax status, and every step that is still missing. Our taxes page explains what that status means for your gift.
Gifts go to one fund for our work to buy medical debt and cancel it. We have not made a purchase yet. Every debt we cancel will be posted on the Impact ledger. How our running costs are paid is still being decided. Our financial statements and filings will be linked on our transparency page once we have them.
Unpaid medical bills are often sold in bulk. We raise money to buy that debt and cancel it. Cancelling ends the obligation to pay that debt and stops collection on it.
Not yet. Giving is in preview: you can walk through every step, but nothing is charged and no receipt is issued. Giving opens once we are registered to fundraise where the law requires it and the payment step is connected.

No tips, ever, and no pre-checked boxes. At the payment step you can choose to add the exact amount that helps cover processing costs. It is only added if you tick the box.
Giving is not open yet, so no monthly gift exists today. When giving opens: stop a monthly gift in two taps from the link we email you. The same link will let you change the amount or pause the gift. If you don't have the link, you will be able to ask for a new one on the Manage page.

Use the contact form and choose “Stop a monthly gift without the email link”. Tell us the date of one gift, the amount and the last four digits of the card it was charged to, so we can find the gift and stop it.

When giving opens, the payment step will show the payment methods available where you are. Tax deductibility outside the United States depends on your local law.
If you have medical bills
6 questions
No. We can't take requests to cancel a specific bill: we buy medical debt in large groups, and we can't choose whose debt is in them. Here is what you can do today: ask the hospital for financial assistance, ask for an itemized bill and check every charge, and use our free guides, letters and scripts.
We have not bought any debt yet, so we have not cancelled anyone's debt or mailed any letters. When we do, each person whose debt we cancel will get a letter in the mail. You will be able to check it on our letter check page.
We have not mailed any relief letters yet. If you received a letter that says it is from The Medical Bill, it is not from us. Please report it on our letter check page. Real relief letters never ask you to pay.
No. We will never ask you to pay to receive relief. We will never collect the debt we buy, report it to credit bureaus or sue over it.

Partners

Hospitals and health systems, state and local governments, sellers of medical debt and companies. We have not signed any partners yet.
That is what we are preparing for. We will buy medical debt and cancel it. We will never collect it, report it or sue. Every cancellation will be posted on our public ledger, with no patient details.
We do not have a matching program yet. Any promotion that ties sales to giving needs a written agreement with us first.

Our current tax status, and what it means for your gift, is shown on our taxes page and in our donation terms. Tax deductibility outside the United States depends on your local law. Talk to a tax professional if you are unsure.
Yes, once giving opens. Every gift will get a numbered receipt by email, and you can open it again from the receipt page. Each January we will also send a statement of your gifts for the year before. On this preview site, no receipts are issued.
Once giving opens, tell us through the contact form. We will correct a receipt by voiding it and issuing a new one with a new number.
